Kourion municipality adopts AI for fire detection
On October 13, 2026, the Kourion municipality launched the PyroGuard AI application to enhance its fire prevention and response capabilities. This pilot program provides authorized municipal staff with real-time notifications on mobile devices whenever smoke or fire is detected. According to Mayor Pantelis Georgiou, the AI system is capable of detecting fire hazards within ten seconds, providing personnel with precise GPS coordinates, visual data from the scene, and navigation instructions to ensure a rapid response.
The initiative aims to suppress fires at their early stages before they escalate into uncontrollable fronts that threaten human lives, property, and the environment. Detected data can also be shared with the Fire Service to coordinate emergency efforts. This deployment follows recent investments in municipal infrastructure, including the addition of two new firefighting vehicles acquired through the EU Prevent-Disc program. These additions bring the municipality's total fleet dedicated to firefighting to five specialized units, marking a broader strategic effort to improve public safety and landscape protection.
