Severe weather conditions trigger red alerts across Greece
On October 12, 2026, severe storms caused significant damage in Lesvos and Rhodes, resulting in power outages, flooding, and a river overflowing in Skala Eresou. A vehicle was swept away near the Agios Andreas bridge but was prevented from reaching the sea due to an immediate intervention by local authorities to clear water drainage paths. Following these events, the National Meteorological Service issued urgent warnings for further deterioration of weather conditions on October 13 and 14.
In response to the forecast of extreme rainfall and gale-force winds, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has placed several regions under a 'Red Code' alert status from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. This emergency measure affects Attica, the Peloponnese, the South Aegean, Crete, Evia, the Sporades, as well as Samos and Icaria. The activation of the National Civil Protection Mechanism mandates the full mobilization of emergency personnel and equipment. Municipalities and regional authorities have been instructed to convene coordinating bodies immediately to prepare for potential flooding and hazards.
