Severe cyclone causes floods and power outages across Cyprus
A severe cyclone reached the coast of Cyprus on October 14, 2026, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue an 'orange' weather alert from 7:00 PM on Wednesday until 5:00 AM on Thursday. The storm brought intense rainfall, with precipitation levels reaching 55-70 mm per hour, alongside hail and strong winds, which significantly impacted the Paphos, Limassol, and Larnaca regions.
The adverse weather caused widespread disruptions, including flooded streets, submerged basements, and power outages in several Paphos communities such as Kato Arodes, Inia, Akhelia, Kathikas, and Pegeia. A flight arriving from Glasgow was diverted to Larnaca airport due to storm conditions, while emergency services performed rescues, including one involving a stranded driver in Ayia Anargyri. Sporting events, including a match between Omonia 29 May and AEP, were suspended in Peristerona.
Authorities implemented travel restrictions, closing the Avakas Gorge and blocking roads such as the Pegeia to Lara route and the Orkontas to Pedoulas road due to fallen trees and rising river levels. Motorists were advised to exercise extreme caution as fog and heavy rain reduced visibility across various districts.
