Latsia-Geri municipality initiates removal of redundant speed bumps
The Municipality of Latsia-Geri in Cyprus has officially launched a road infrastructure project aimed at removing 36 speed bumps from its municipal districts. The initiative involves the removal of 20 speed humps in the Latsia district and 16 in the Geri district, as part of an effort to optimize traffic flow and remove installations that were deemed unnecessary or excessive following a recent municipal assessment.
The project carries a total budget of €130,000, with half of the funding provided by the Ministry of Transport. In addition to removals, the project includes the reconstruction of two unsuitable humps, the replacement of one with a raised pedestrian crossing, and the installation of one raised platform. Mayor Christos Pittaras clarified that the decision to remove these structures is not universal; safety measures remain in place near sensitive locations such as schools, churches, and community gathering points where traffic calming remains essential.
Work is currently underway, which may lead to temporary traffic adjustments, delays, or minor disruptions for local commuters. The municipality has apologized for the inconvenience, emphasizing that the changes are based on evolving neighborhood needs. Further assessments may lead to additional removals in the future if infrastructure is found to no longer serve a practical purpose for current road safety requirements.
