Violent anti-government protests escalate in Albania
Since October 13, 2026, Albania has been gripped by widespread civil unrest as student-led demonstrations transformed into an anti-government movement. Thousands of participants, joined by high school students and other citizens, have rallied in Tirana and other cities including Elbasan, Shkoder, and Korce. Protesters are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, citing corruption, high costs of higher education, poor university conditions, and limited job prospects. Some reports also link the unrest to opposition against a controversial real estate investment project involving Jared Kushner.
The situation escalated into violent clashes with security forces, who deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds. Protesters set fires to the Ministry of Education, a local Raiffeisen Bank branch, and other infrastructure, including a police vehicle and a pavilion near the Prime Minister's office. By October 15, authorities reported at least 101 injuries among protesters and police, with 35 individuals detained. The turmoil forced the suspension of parliamentary sessions and public transportation in the capital.
Prime Minister Rama has dismissed calls for his resignation, maintaining that governments change through democratic elections rather than street protests. He accused the opposition of inciting the violence to sabotage Albania's path toward European Union membership, while government officials labeled the events as orchestrated by foreign entities. The government remains focused on maintaining order while publicly refusing to yield to the protesters' demands.
