Cyprus health insurance system reports surge in after-hours clinic visits
Official data from the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) of Cyprus shows a significant increase in the use of after-hours clinics within the General Healthcare System (GeSY). Between 2023 and the end of September 2026, a total of 51,503 visits were recorded. Annual figures grew from 12,185 in 2023 to 15,168 in 2025, representing a 24.5% increase. In the first nine months of 2026, an additional 10,310 visits were documented.
Pediatric patients represent more than half of the total volume, with 28,820 pediatric visits compared to 22,683 adult visits reported over the cumulative period. Geographically, Nicosia recorded the highest volume in 2025 with 3,809 visits, followed by Paphos, Larnaca, Famagusta, and Limassol. Notably, Limassol shows significantly lower utilization rates compared to other districts, while Paphos and Famagusta have seen sharp upward trends.
The HIO has launched an information campaign to raise awareness among beneficiaries about the availability of these services during weekends and public holidays. The strategic objective is to reduce congestion in hospital Accident and Emergency Departments (TAEP) by redirecting non-critical cases to the appropriate after-hours facilities, ensuring that patients receive timely care for urgent but non-life-threatening health issues.
