President Christodoulides addresses EU priorities in Maastricht and Brussels
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides visited Maastricht University on October 14 to deliver a speech titled "Cyprus and the European edifice: Bridging Europe and the Middle East on the road to strategic autonomy." During the event, hosted by Dean Esther Versluis, he emphasized Cyprus's role as a regional bridge and discussed the achievements of the Cypriot EU Council Presidency.
Following his visit to the Netherlands, President Christodoulides traveled to Brussels for the European Council summit held on October 15 and 16. Key discussions focused on the 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), with Christodoulides advocating for a balanced budget that supports cohesion policy and agriculture. He explicitly warned that proposed budget cuts could reach 10-12% and called for flexible EU frameworks to address rising energy costs, including the suspension of the Emissions Trading System (ETS 2).
Additionally, the President highlighted the geopolitical significance of the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) and condemned illegal Turkish actions regarding a memorandum with the occupied territories. He also expressed hope that Cyprus's potential accession to the Schengen Area would be discussed in December and confirmed his readiness to contribute to a new European mission in Lebanon.
