Limassol left without funding for road projects in 2027 budget
The government of Cyprus has excluded critical road infrastructure projects from the 2027 national budget, effectively stalling efforts to alleviate traffic congestion in Limassol. Despite repeated government announcements and public acknowledgement of the severe traffic problem by the President, no major works have been commissioned for the upcoming year, keeping planned improvements restricted to theoretical studies and ongoing discussions.
Local government officials have expressed strong dissatisfaction with this development. Mr. Xydias stated that despite frequent requests for information, the government has failed to provide concrete construction schedules or meet deadlines previously announced. The absence of funding is expected to delay any relief from traffic congestion for several years, as necessary construction works would require an estimated 3-4 years to complete once initiated. Consequently, the resolution of the city's traffic crisis is effectively being deferred to future administrations.
In response to the exclusion of these projects from the 2027 budget, local authorities are actively seeking meetings with government officials to demand explanations. The situation remains tense as there is currently no set timeline for when these essential upgrades might be reconsidered or funded.
