Audit office report reveals major shortcomings in Nicosia public transport
On October 14, 2026, the Audit Office released a report detailing significant deficiencies in Nicosia’s public bus network. Based on field research conducted between November 10 and December 1, 2025, involving 110 staff members acting as mystery shoppers, the study found that 63% of participants would not choose the bus again, primarily due to comparisons with the convenience and speed of private vehicles. Key infrastructure issues include the lack of seating or shelters at 22% of stops, no route information at 55% of stops, and limited access for people with disabilities.
The report highlighted poor service reliability, including long intervals between routes and discrepancies in digital information apps. Transport Minister Evi Tsolaki acknowledged the findings but noted that independent surveys of 6,000 regular passengers paint a more positive picture, with 8 out of 10 users reporting satisfaction. Meanwhile, the bus operator, Cyprus Public Transport (CPT), dismissed claims of a service "crisis." The company stated it has already addressed many of the identified issues and emphasized that the Audit Office sample consisted of occasional passengers rather than regular commuters.
The operator confirmed it is working with the Ministry to further improve digital information and bus stop infrastructure. Future steps include continued monitoring of the service contract and the ongoing implementation of "smart" bus stops across the city.
