Audit office report reveals major shortcomings in Nicosia public transport
A special report published on October 14, 2026, by the Audit Office has exposed significant deficiencies in Nicosia’s public bus system. The study, based on fieldwork conducted between November 10 and December 1, 2025, involved 110 staff members posing as passengers to evaluate 204 routes. Findings indicate that 63% of participants would not choose to use buses again, primarily due to reliability issues, long waiting times, and comparisons with the convenience of private vehicles. The report highlights that 55% of bus stops lack route information, while 32% have no shelter and 22% lack both seating and shelter.
The findings have triggered criticism from the opposition party AKEL, which accused the government of wasting public funds. In response, Cyprus Public Transport (CPT) stated that many identified issues have already been addressed and rejected claims of a system in crisis, noting the audit sample was limited to non-regular passengers. Transport Minister Evi Tsolaki acknowledged the report's validity but countered with data showing 80% satisfaction among 6,000 regular commuters. The Ministry is now considering potential revisions to existing service contracts to improve travel times and enhance accessibility across the transport network.
