Turkish police seize control of opposition broadcaster Halk TV
On the morning of Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Turkish police forces conducted a dawn raid on the Istanbul headquarters of Halk TV, the country's prominent opposition news channel. Hundreds of officers participated in the operation, cordoning off the building and blocking employee access while initiating a search of the premises. Shortly after the raid began, live broadcasting was halted and replaced with pre-recorded content.
The network confirmed via the social media platform X that the government had appointed a trustee to take over the station's management. Reports indicate that units from the Financial Crimes Investigation Branch, the Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Department, and Anti-Terrorism teams were involved in the operation. While the exact grounds for the raid remain under formal investigation, some initial reports suggest allegations of financial crimes.
Station owner Cafer Mahiroglu confirmed the police presence, and producer Deniz Bayramoglu reported that the station's editor-in-chief, Suat Toktas, unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate with the trustee authorities to maintain the live broadcast. As of now, the building remains under police blockade, and employees have been barred from entry, with no further updates provided on the status of the investigation or the future of the channel’s operations.
