HELLENiQ Energy completes its first large-scale battery storage project in Thessaloniki
HELLENiQ Renewables, a subsidiary of HELLENiQ Energy, has completed the construction of its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the company’s industrial facilities in Thessaloniki. The project represents a significant investment of approximately 50 million euros and marks a strategic move by the group to expand its portfolio into critical infrastructure for energy management.
With an installed capacity of 100 MW and 200 MWh of storage, this facility stands as one of the largest energy storage projects in both Greece and Southeast Europe. The system is designed to provide vital flexibility and balancing services to the National Electricity Transmission System, enhancing the country's grid reliability and overall energy security.
This infrastructure addresses the challenge of energy waste, as it allows for the storage of green electricity during periods of low demand that would otherwise be curtailed. By enabling the capture and future utilization of surplus renewable energy, the initiative marks a transition toward more efficient integration of renewables into the national power grid.
