UK pledges military aid to Ukraine amid tensions with US leadership
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Downing Street on October 14, 2026, to demonstrate continued support for Ukraine. During the talks, Burnham pledged to accelerate the delivery of surface-to-air missiles and presented a new 45-million-pound package of light multipurpose missiles designed to counter advanced Russian jet-powered drones ahead of the winter season.
The meeting followed public criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently suggested that Ukraine should have a new president and brokered a deal with Moscow regarding the supply of Russian diesel. President Zelenskyy publicly expressed feelings of betrayal, stating that it is painful to see the U.S. choose a side in the conflict. While Zelenskyy noted he still counts on future cooperation with the U.S., he also requested that Elon Musk restore Starlink services vital for front-line communication and drone interception.
Following the summit, Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine would resume strikes on Russian oil refineries, marking an end to previous restrictions. Meanwhile, hostilities continue, with recent Russian air strikes in the Dnipropetrovsk region resulting in two deaths, and the Russian Defense Ministry reporting attacks on cargo ships near the port of Izmail.
