Six vessels attacked in Strait of Hormuz amid rising regional tensions
On Sunday, October 11, 2026, six commercial vessels were targeted in a series of attacks within the Strait of Hormuz and the adjacent Gulf of Oman. According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations, five ships, including tankers and a container vessel, were struck by unknown projectiles while transiting the strait. A sixth tanker, located near the Sohar anchorage in the Gulf of Oman, was attacked by an unmanned aerial vehicle, necessitating an emergency crew evacuation.
These incidents follow an intensification of shipping attacks since late September. Senior Iranian officials have indicated that Tehran is implementing a new strategy to restrict maritime passage and manipulate global oil prices to influence the upcoming United States midterm elections. This approach follows the February 28 strikes conducted by the U.S. and Israel against Iran. By deploying varied and increased offensive tactics, Iran seeks to counter Western efforts to stabilize energy markets, effectively weaponizing the waterway that historically accounts for nearly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade.
