Severe flooding and tragic fatality reported in Istanbul
Heavy rainfall starting on the evening of October 13, 2026, has caused severe flooding across Istanbul, affecting both the European and Asian sides of the city. Rainfall totals reached as high as 210 millimeters in Beykoz, with seven districts reporting between 50 and 95 millimeters. The city experienced chaos as streets turned into rivers, public transport hubs like the Haciosman metro station were inundated, and buildings, including schools and homes, sustained water damage. Emergency services received over 2,500 reports, documenting over 1,200 separate flooding incidents.
A tragic incident occurred in the Balat district, where a 14-year-old boy, identified as M.I., died after suffering a fatal electric shock while walking through floodwater. Surveillance footage showed the boy walking barefoot before stepping into a water-filled area that was electrified, likely due to faulty infrastructure. Additionally, a dramatic rescue was captured in the Esenyurt district, where residents saved a woman from being swept away by strong currents. Authorities, including Istanbul Governor Davut Gul, have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and relocate from basement dwellings as weather warnings remain in effect until Saturday, with further temperature drops expected.
