Takata airbag investigation file submitted to the Attorney General
The Cyprus Police have officially submitted the case file regarding faulty Takata airbags to the Law Office for review and instructions. This action, confirmed on October 14, 2026, marks the conclusion of the initial police investigation, which lasted approximately 15 to 16 months. The Attorney General, George Savvides, will now evaluate the evidence to determine if there are grounds to initiate criminal proceedings or if further investigative steps are required.
The investigation originated from an ad hoc committee report, chaired by former Supreme Court judge Michalakis Christodoulou, along with members Michael Vorkas and Theodosios Hadjimichail. That report, which reached the authorities in July 2025, identified potential criminal negligence and highlighted the significant responsibilities of former Transport Ministry officials between 2013 and 2023, specifically naming former ministers Efthymios Flourentzou and Marios Demetriades. The committee's findings suggested that systematic failures allowed these defective components to enter the Cypriot market.
Currently, the file is under evaluation by the Legal Service. While police representatives noted that it is up to the Attorney General to decide whether to press charges, the legal process remains ongoing with a final decision on prosecution expected in the near future.
