Cyprus police submit Takata airbag investigation report to Attorney General
The Cyprus Police have formally submitted their investigation report regarding the Takata airbag scandal to the Law Office of the Republic. This file, delivered on October 6, 2026, marks the conclusion of a 15-month probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at police headquarters. The investigation covers two fatalities—Kyriakos Oxinos (2023) and Styliani Giorgalli (2024)—and the serious injury of Alexandros Loungou. It also examines the handling of the issue by relevant departments and public officials over a decade.
The probe follows an earlier 2025 ad hoc committee report which identified potential criminal responsibility among former Transport Department directors and other officials. According to reports, the police have recommended criminal charges against several individuals and legal entities. Attorney General George Savvides confirmed that his office is currently evaluating the extensive case file to determine if criminal offenses are substantiated and whether prosecutions should proceed. Savvides emphasized that while he understands public pressure and the grief of the victims' families, the process must follow due legal procedure and there is no fixed timeline for a final decision.
