Cyprus reports lowest e-waste collection in the European Union
In 2024, Cyprus recorded the lowest volume of electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) collection in the European Union, totaling 4.7 kilograms per capita. This figure stands in stark contrast to the EU average of 12.3 kilograms per person. The data, published by Eurostat, also highlights that 15.4 kilograms of new electronic equipment per capita were placed on the Cypriot market, a rate among the lowest in the bloc alongside Slovakia and Greece.
Experts note that the significant disparity between the amount of new equipment purchased and the volume of e-waste collected suggests an increase in the accumulation of electronic devices within households. These items may remain in use, be kept in storage, or be disposed of through informal and unmonitored channels. Across the EU, an average of 32.4 kilograms of new equipment, including smartphones and computers, was introduced to the market per capita during the same period, indicating a widespread trend of accumulating tech stock.
