Turkish Cypriot groups seek EU intervention over demographic concerns
On October 6, 2026, the Movement for Peace and Solidarity, a Turkish Cypriot organization, submitted a formal letter to European Commission Vice-President Raffaele Fitto regarding the demographic transformation in the occupied territories of Cyprus. Representatives Sener Elcil, Izzet Izcan, and Murat Kanatli argue that Turkish policies of settlement, assimilation, and integration threaten the survival of the Turkish Cypriot community and distort its political will.
The letter highlights significant demographic shifts, citing data from 2023 including 951,356 active mobile phone users, 228,938 residential electricity meters, and 210,121 registered voters in the occupied areas. These figures are presented as evidence of demographic engineering that alters the character of the region. The group is urging the European Union to take diplomatic action to protect the local community.
Furthermore, the organization criticized the Republic of Cyprus for its perceived failure to pursue legal action against these settlement policies in international courts. As of now, the status of these efforts remains ongoing, with the group seeking broader international support to address their concerns regarding the island's social fabric.
