Turkish Cypriot organizations request EU intervention regarding demographic changes
On October 6, the Movement of Cypriots for Peace and Solidarity submitted a formal letter to European Commission Vice President Raffaele Fitto in Brussels, requesting urgent intervention regarding colonization and demographic alteration in the occupied areas of Cyprus. The organization, represented by Sener Elcil, Izzet Izcan, and Murat Kanatli, asserts that Turkish policies of assimilation and integration threaten the survival of the Turkish Cypriot community and distort its political will.
To support these claims, the movement provided specific data regarding the population in the occupied regions as of 2023, including 951,356 active mobile phone users, 228,938 residential electricity meters, and 210,121 registered voters. The group further criticized the Republic of Cyprus for its failure to pursue legal action against these demographic policies in international courts.
This initiative reflects growing concerns among Turkish Cypriot organizations over the long-term impact of current policies on the social fabric and political identity of the island. The status of their request remains ongoing as the movement seeks broader international support to address these challenges, with no immediate timeline provided for a response from the European Commission.
