Political parties initiate discussions for the upcoming presidential elections
Political activity in Cyprus is intensifying ahead of the presidential elections, as the movement 'Amesi Dimokratia' (Direct Democracy) and the ALMA party have begun consultations regarding potential candidates. During an online meeting attended by roughly 100 supporters, party leader Fidias Panagiotou, alongside deputies Dimitris Baros and Giannis Laouris, discussed the possibility of an internal nomination process or strategic cooperation with non-parliamentary factions and potentially AKEL. Despite these discussions, the political landscape remains fluid.
Simultaneously, ALMA representative Michalis Paraskevas stated that his party has not reached a definitive decision, noting that the candidacy of Odysseas Michailidis remains an open possibility. Meanwhile, Evgenios Champoullas of ELAM has explicitly denied reports of a meeting between Averof Neofytou and Christos Christou. Champoullas expressed his personal preference for an independent candidacy for ELAM in the upcoming election cycle. All parties involved emphasize that current contacts are preliminary, with no formal electoral alliances concluded as of mid-October 2026.
