Cypriot parliamentary committee discusses voting rights for police officers
On Wednesday, the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs in Cyprus met to deliberate on granting police and fire department personnel the right to run as candidates in elections. The current legislation imposes restrictions that exclude these security officials from participating in electoral processes as candidates.
Angelos Nikolaou, head of the Cyprus Police Association, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the discussions. The committee addressed critical questions, including whether police officers would be required to resign from their duties if elected. The Ministry noted that efforts are underway to align the status of security personnel with that of the broader public service, a move the Association supports as a matter of fairness.
While officials agree that police officers are citizens with fundamental rights, the committee is focusing on establishing necessary safeguards. These measures are intended to ensure that political involvement does not interfere with the integrity of their law enforcement duties or create conflicts of interest. The discussion reflects an ongoing effort to harmonize domestic regulations with democratic principles, ensuring that security sector employees maintain their duties while exercising their political rights.
