Severe storms hit Cyprus causing flooding, power outages and rescues
On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, a severe weather system hit Cyprus, characterized by torrential rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms. Under an orange weather warning, which remained in effect until 5:00 AM on Thursday, October 15, authorities reported flash flooding, landslides, and widespread infrastructure disruption across Nicosia, Paphos, Limassol, and Larnaca districts. Notable incidents included the rescue of six tourists trapped by floodwaters in the Avakas Gorge and a driver saved from a flooded vehicle. A Glasgow-to-Paphos flight was diverted to Larnaca airport due to the storm.
The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) reported numerous power outages across the island caused by lightning and downed trees, though officials confirmed by Thursday morning that all faults had been repaired. The Fire Service responded to 78 emergency calls over a 24-hour period, with 13 of these directly related to flood relief operations, including pumping water from basements and clearing blocked storm drains. While the weather caused significant local road closures—such as the Peyia-Lara road—and traffic hazards on the Limassol-Paphos highway, no injuries were reported.
