Severe weather conditions cause widespread disruption across Cyprus
On October 14, 2026, severe weather hit Cyprus, characterized by heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. The Meteorology Department issued an orange weather warning in effect from 3:00 PM on Wednesday until 5:00 AM on Thursday, forecasting rainfall intensities between 55 and 70 millimeters per hour. A CY-Alert emergency notification was sent to residents in the Paphos, Limassol, and Larnaca districts due to the worsening conditions.
The most significant disruptions occurred in the Paphos district, where flash flooding, lightning strikes, and strong winds caused power outages in communities such as Peyia, Ineia, and Kathikas. The fire brigade responded to multiple calls for water pumping from flooded basements and street blockages. The Peyia–Lara road was closed due to the overflowing Aspros river, and six tourists had to be rescued by police from the Avakas Gorge after being cut off by fast-flowing water. Additionally, a flight from Glasgow to Paphos was diverted to Larnaca airport.
Elsewhere on the island, falling trees and landslides impacted the road network, including the Orkontas–Pedoullas road and routes near Troodos. In some areas, such as Amargeti, heavy rainfall caused sudden flooding shortly after locals had been managing a small brush fire. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging motorists to drive with caution, use headlights, and maintain safe distances.
