Greece announces €98 million energy subsidy package for winter season
The Greek government has announced a new financial support package worth €98 million to assist households with heating oil and fuel costs during the upcoming winter. This initiative, unveiled by Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou, includes a 30% increase in the annual heating oil benefit and direct subsidies at the pump effective from mid-October through the end of the month.
Key measures include a total discount of €0.40 per litre for heating oil—comprising a €0.20 state subsidy and a €0.20 reduction from Greek refineries—aimed at maintaining a price point of approximately €1.55 per litre. Additionally, the government has introduced subsidies of €0.15 per litre for diesel and €0.10 per litre for gasoline. These efforts build upon more than €860 million in energy support provided since the start of 2026, alongside pending proposals for €95 million in subsidies for energy-intensive industries.
The distribution period for heating oil in Greece runs from October 15 to April 30. Authorities have indicated that decisions regarding the potential extension of these subsidy measures into November will be finalized by the end of October, depending on prevailing international energy market conditions.
