UK reaffirms commitment to Cyprus settlement during independence anniversary event
On October 13, 2026, the British government reaffirmed its commitment to achieving a comprehensive and fair solution to the Cyprus issue based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality. This statement was made by Lord Wood, the British Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Europe, during an official reception in London celebrating the 66th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cyprus.
The event was hosted by the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Kingdom, Dr. Kyriakos Kouros, at his official residence. During the reception, Dr. Kouros urged the British government to maintain an active role in efforts to resume peace negotiations, citing London’s unique responsibilities as a guarantor power and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. The gathering was attended by British diplomats, politicians, and international representatives, including Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain and the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization.
Looking ahead, officials indicated that the United Kingdom and Cyprus are preparing to launch a Strategic Dialogue, which is expected to take place by the end of 2026 to further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation.
