Akel joins nationwide protest against electricity prices in Nicosia
A nationwide protest against the high cost of electricity is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026, in Nicosia. The movement, led by the Direct Democracy Cyprus party, has gained significant political momentum after the left-wing party AKEL officially announced its support. This decision follows a telephone consultation between the leader of Direct Democracy, Fidias Panayiotou, and AKEL’s parliamentary spokesperson, George Loukaides.
The demonstration will begin at 4:00 PM at Eleftherias Square, followed by a march toward the presidential palace. AKEL joins a coalition that already includes the Ecologists' Movement-Citizens' Cooperation and the Animal Party of Cyprus. Organizers emphasize that the issue of electricity pricing impacts all citizens, including families, pensioners, and small businesses, and is not restricted to partisan interests. To facilitate attendance, free bus services will be provided from four different cities across the country.
Fidias Panayiotou has previously urged the public to participate in large numbers, explicitly noting that a low turnout, such as 100 people, would be considered a disappointment. The protest organizers hope that a large gathering will make it difficult for the government to ignore their demands for more affordable electricity for all.
