Cyprus to launch mobile support units for the elderly in 2027
The government of Cyprus is finalizing a plan to launch mobile support units for elderly citizens, scheduled to commence on January 1, 2027. These units, consisting of a nurse, a social worker, and a carer, will provide free home-based services ranging from healthcare and administrative assistance to emotional support, aimed at combating isolation among the vulnerable. The initiative will initially launch as a pilot program in the mountain villages of the Limassol district, operated by the Estia Centre due to their existing infrastructure and expertise in elder care.
This decision addresses the country's demographic shift, where nearly 20% of the population is over 65 years old. Data indicates that approximately 30,000 seniors face significant daily limitations due to health issues. While life expectancy in Cyprus exceeds 82 years, healthy life expectancy is significantly lower, averaging 66 years. Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Tina Pavlou emphasized that the 'No one alone' initiative seeks to bridge these gaps, noting that emotional health has historically been a neglected priority that must be addressed alongside physical care.
