Tensions rise over SpaceX Starshield connectivity limits in Ukraine
Ukrainian military forces recently reported technical disruptions to the Starshield satellite network, a military-grade version of Starlink, affecting drone operations and air defense coordination. According to Ukrainian defense advisor Serhiy Beskrestnov, SpaceX implemented a speed limit on terminals moving faster than 161 kilometers per hour (100 mph) without prior notice, which hampered ongoing missions. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski publicly criticized Elon Musk for the restrictions, questioning the potential political motivations behind the decision.
In response, Elon Musk stated that Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the U.S. government, asserting that any speed or usage limits are decided by the American military and the U.S. President. Following these claims, U.S. President Donald Trump denied personal or company responsibility for the connectivity issues, while maintaining that he has a good relationship with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Amid these developments, Musk has publicly renewed his calls for Zelenskyy's resignation, claiming the conflict would otherwise continue. As of October 16, President Zelenskyy stated that full connectivity has not yet been restored, and technical limitations persist.
