Limassol remains flood-free following heavy rainfall
On October 15, 2026, the city of Limassol reported no significant flood-related issues despite intense weather conditions that caused problems in other districts of Cyprus. Giannis Tsouloftas, President of the Limassol District Self-Government Organization (EOA), confirmed that emergency services and the fire department have reported no major incidents, highlighting the city's overall safety.
This resilience is attributed to two major flood protection projects, specifically the Greater Limassol and Central Limassol schemes. These infrastructure projects were completed and handed over in 2024 by the former Sewerage Board of Limassol (SALA) and local municipalities. The initiative was designed to address long-standing chronic flooding issues that had plagued the urban area for years.
According to official statements, the infrastructure has proven effective under current conditions. The city remains prepared as authorities continue to monitor weather developments, with officials expressing confidence in the durability and capacity of the established flood protection network to withstand ongoing precipitation events.
