Energy storage facility licensing complicates technical school project in Alambra
The planned construction of a new technical school in Alambra, announced by President Nikos Christodoulides, is facing significant uncertainty due to the simultaneous licensing of a nearby energy storage facility. During a recent session of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment, concerns were raised regarding the facility, which initially requested capacity for 40 MW before increasing it to 80 MW. Planning officials have expressed reservations about the site, questioning whether the original environmental impact assessments are sufficient for the updated project scope.
Simultaneously, the project faces competition from the Municipality of Lefkara. Mayor Sofoklis Sofokleous sent a formal letter to the Minister of Education, Athina Michaelidou, on September 17, 2026, reiterating a proposal to construct the school in Kornos instead. The mayor reports that he has yet to receive a response to his repeated requests and proposals, keeping the debate over the school's optimal location active. The intersection of industrial development and government infrastructure planning has led to calls for greater clarity on the site’s suitability and future viability.
