Cyprus and Israel fail to reach agreement on Aphrodite-Yishai gas field
Technocrats and legal advisors from Cyprus and Israel held online talks on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, to resolve a long-standing dispute regarding the shared natural gas reservoir located between the Cypriot 'Aphrodite' field and the Israeli 'Yishai' field. Despite the participation of representatives from both states and the companies managing the fields, the discussions concluded without a final agreement.
The core of the dispute involves the geological intersection of the Aphrodite reservoir, located in Block 12 of the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), with the Yishai field situated within the Israeli EEZ. The American energy giant Chevron, which operates the Aphrodite field, was actively involved in the negotiations alongside government officials. This meeting served as a continuation of previous diplomatic efforts to settle competing claims over the transboundary gas resources.
While the latest round of talks did not yield a breakthrough, both parties have agreed to continue the dialogue in future meetings, the scheduling of which will be finalized shortly. No further specific deadlines were provided, but the process remains ongoing as both nations seek to reconcile their legal and commercial positions regarding the development of the shared energy assets.
