PwC global survey highlights widening artificial intelligence skills gap
The PwC Global Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey 2026, which polled nearly 50,000 workers across 48 countries, reveals an increasing digital skills gap as artificial intelligence adoption accelerates. While 64% of employees reported using AI in the last 12 months—up from 54% in 2025—access to necessary training has declined, dropping from 59% to 51% over the same period.
A significant concern is the group defined as the 'Engine Room,' which makes up 56% of the workforce. These employees, who possess widely available skill sets, are currently at an early stage of AI integration. Notably, only two out of five individuals within this group feel they have sufficient access to essential development and training opportunities. This disparity exacerbates existing pressures caused by the rising cost of living and increased workloads.
The findings underscore a two-tier workforce trajectory, where a lack of institutional support in reskilling leaves a majority of workers at risk of falling behind. As organizational changes move rapidly, the disconnect between AI implementation and human capital development remains a primary challenge for global labor markets.
