Cyprus launches rural women empowerment initiatives
On October 15, 2026, the office of the Gender Equality Commissioner of Cyprus, Josie Christodoulou, launched a new campaign titled "Women’s Stories–Rural Women." Coinciding with the International Day of Rural Women, the initiative features the personal narratives of seven women active in the agricultural sector. The project aims to highlight the historical and economic contribution of women to the island’s rural development while addressing the daily challenges and multiple roles they manage.
This campaign follows previous government efforts to improve women’s access to finance, technology, and business opportunities in rural areas. Commissioner Christodoulou recently stated at a conference in Kyperounta that despite the vital role women play in agriculture and agritourism, they continue to face barriers related to infrastructure, professional networking, and decision-making. The government is currently implementing measures to integrate gender equality into national budget planning and provide tax relief to support economic independence.
The timing of these initiatives is particularly significant as the United Nations General Assembly has declared 2026 the International Year of Agricultural Women. By showcasing these personal testimonies, the commissioner’s office hopes to inspire future generations and advocate for greater recognition of the essential role women play in maintaining agricultural production and preserving cultural traditions across Cyprus.
