Alma movement demands tax relief on fuel in Cyprus
The Alma – Citizens for Cyprus movement has formally requested that the government seek additional tax relief for petrol and diesel, beyond the current efforts regarding heating oil. The movement argues that current government measures are insufficient to address the significant cost-of-living increases affecting households and businesses.
In a recent statement, Alma highlighted that even a complete elimination of the remaining Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on heating oil would only provide a marginal benefit of approximately 2.5 cents per liter. The movement notes that the price of heating oil has risen by more than 70 cents per liter since February, making the proposed relief negligible in real terms. They questioned why the government has not pursued a similar exemption for road fuels, citing the case of Sweden, which reportedly secured a temporary derogation from the European Union to lower SCT levels below the established European minimums in 2026.
Alma is urging the government to adopt temporary, costed support measures to assist low and middle-income groups. As of mid-October 2026, the government has yet to announce any formal application or strategy for tax deviations concerning gasoline or diesel.
