India projected to become the world's fourth largest economy by 2027
According to the latest International Monetary Fund (IMF) World Economic Outlook, India is set to become the world's fourth-largest economy by 2027. Projections indicate that India's nominal GDP will reach 4.52 trillion dollars, surpassing both the United Kingdom and Japan. The United Kingdom is expected to take the fifth spot with 4.49 trillion dollars, while Japan is forecast to drop to the sixth position with 4.47 trillion dollars.
In 2026, Japan is currently maintaining its position as the fourth largest global economy, behind the United States, China, and Germany, with a nominal GDP of 4.34 trillion dollars. The United Kingdom and India follow in the rankings with 4.27 trillion dollars and 4.06 trillion dollars respectively. France is projected to remain the seventh-largest economy globally through 2027, with its nominal GDP expected to reach 3.65 trillion dollars.
The shift in rankings reflects diverging growth paths between India and Japan. India's ascent is attributed to strong domestic demand, high growth rates, and a robust services sector, which remain resilient despite elevated energy costs.
