Two injured in explosion at Motor Oil refinery in Corinth
An explosion occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, October 15, 2026, at the Motor Oil refinery in Agioi Theodoroi, Corinth, Greece. The incident took place at unit 750 during scheduled maintenance work on a high-pressure heat exchanger. Two contract workers, aged 40 and 59, were injured, suffering from burns and fractures. One of the victims was intubated, and both were transported to the Corinth General Hospital, with plans for a subsequent transfer to Thriassio Hospital for specialized care. Additionally, three other individuals reportedly suffered minor injuries and sought medical assistance independently.
This event follows a deadly explosion at the same refinery on October 9, which resulted in two deaths, and occurred only 24 hours after a worker strike protesting safety conditions. Authorities, including the prosecutor, have ordered an investigation, with the Labor Inspectorate tasked with conducting an on-site inspection. Officials are currently searching for the contractor responsible for the welding work conducted at the site, and formal testimonies are expected to be collected as part of the ongoing inquiry.
