U.S. cancels live broadcast of Nidal Hasan's execution
U.S. President Donald Trump has officially reversed the decision to live-stream the execution of Nidal Hasan, the perpetrator of the 2009 Fort Hood military base attack. The initial proposal, announced by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth earlier this month, faced widespread condemnation from both Republicans and Democrats, as well as religious leaders and international observers, due to concerns regarding the ethical implications and the potential for the footage to fuel radicalization.
Despite cancelling the broadcast, the execution remains scheduled for December 3 at a military base in Texas. The 56-year-old former U.S. Army major, who killed 13 people and wounded 32 others during the 2009 shooting, will be executed by firing squad. Trump stated on Truth Social that while he personally believed a broadcast could serve as a deterrent, he chose to respect the opinions of those who found the concept inappropriate. Immediate family members of the victims will be permitted to observe the proceedings in person if they choose to do so.
