Diver recounts his 2021 encounter with a humpback whale
In June 2021, 62-year-old professional diver Michael Packard experienced a rare survival ordeal off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. While diving for lobsters near Provincetown on the morning of June 11, Packard felt a sudden, powerful jolt before being plunged into complete darkness. He initially suspected a shark attack, but soon realized he was trapped inside the mouth of a humpback whale. Packard clarifies that he was never swallowed, but remained caught in the animal's jaws for approximately 30 to 45 seconds while feeling intense pressure and movement before being released.
The incident has resurfaced in public discourse due to the release of the film "Whalefall," which is based on a novel by Daniel Kraus. Although the film is not a literal adaptation of Packard’s experience, he notes that he strongly identifies with the protagonist's feelings of primal fear and the struggle for survival while being contained by a giant marine mammal. Packard’s story remains one of the most remarkable documented cases of human survival in oceanic conditions, highlighting the dangers of professional diving and the unpredictability of marine wildlife.
