Pope Leo XIV discharged from hospital following lung cancer surgery
Pope Leo XIV is set to be discharged from the Agostino Gemelli Policlinic in Rome on October 17, following a successful surgery on October 13 to remove a tumor from his right lung. The 71-year-old pontiff underwent the procedure after a routine medical checkup revealed a suspicious nodule, which subsequent histological analysis identified as adenocarcinoma. Throughout his recovery, the Pope received physiotherapy and maintained his daily activities, showing continuous clinical improvement as confirmed by his personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, and the head of thoracic surgery, Dr. Stefano Margaritora.
Following the successful operation, the Pope was able to resume his work and even participated in religious services within the hospital chapel. Vatican officials confirmed his post-operative recovery proceeded smoothly with normal test results and lung function. The Holy See announced that the Pope will return to the Vatican on Saturday evening. He is scheduled to resume his public duties on Sunday, October 18, when he is expected to lead the traditional Angelus prayer from the window of the papal apartment.
