Pope Leo XIV recovering well after lung surgery in Rome
Pope Leo XIV remains hospitalized at the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome following a surgery performed on October 13 to remove a tumor and the lower lobe of his right lung. Medical bulletins issued on October 15 indicate that the Pontiff’s post-operative recovery is proceeding smoothly, with routine examinations showing normal results and chest X-rays confirming that the lung is recovering as expected.
During his ongoing hospitalization, the Pope has resumed some of his professional duties and has been participating in a physical therapy program. According to Vatican press office director Matteo Bruni, the North American Pontiff was able to conduct daily tasks independently and even concelebrated a mass in the chapel adjacent to his hospital room. Holy See sources note that the Pope has received only one visitor, a close associate, since the operation.
While the medical team reports that the recovery is progressing well, the Pope continues his convalescence under observation. No further official update regarding his potential discharge date has been provided at this time.
