Cyprus Sports Ethics Commission intensifies efforts against match-fixing
The Cyprus Committee for Ethics and Sports Protection has processed over 80 investigations in the last six years, with approximately half related to match-fixing. Committee President Stefanos Skordis noted that obtaining evidence for these clandestine operations is internationally recognized as a significant challenge. To improve oversight, the committee is expanding its partnership with Sportradar to monitor lower football divisions and other sports, following a high volume of suspicious betting reports in the second division during the 2025/2026 season.
Currently, the committee is evaluating two completed reports regarding suspicious betting in the 2025/2026 second division season, with a third report expected shortly. Additionally, the committee has appointed three investigators to examine three cup matches from the 2026/2027 season due to allegations of potential manipulation. While these investigations are ongoing, the involved football clubs have officially denied the allegations of wrongdoing. Out of the investigations conducted over the last six years, eight to ten have reached the Office of the Attorney General for criminal prosecution, although no convictions for match-fixing have been reported to date.
