British father fined in Paphos after toddler's fatal fall
On October 16, 2026, the Paphos District Court imposed a €3,000 fine on a 37-year-old British man for the death of his three-year-old son. The child died on July 12, 2026, after falling 10 meters from a fourth-floor hotel window in Chlorakas, Paphos, on the first day of the family's holiday. The defendant had previously pleaded guilty to causing death through a reckless, rash, or dangerous act.
During the mitigation hearing on October 6, the defense argued that the incident was a momentary lapse in judgment, noting that the father mistakenly believed the window was closed when he lifted his child to look outside. The court heard that initial reports suggested an alcohol level of 34mg, though later lab tests indicated 124mg at the time of the incident. The defense maintained that this consumption did not affect the father's behavior. The court acknowledged the defendant's clean criminal record and the profound emotional toll of losing his child, describing the event as a tragic "momentary mistake" rather than an intentional act.
The father, who was supported in court by his relatives, has now been released following the payment of the fine. Any surplus from his previous bail will be returned to him, concluding the legal proceedings.
