Tesla unveils flying Roadster prototype with SpaceX technology
On October 15, 2026, Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled a new prototype of the Tesla Roadster at the SpaceX testing facility in McGregor, Texas. The two-seater sports car, developed in collaboration with SpaceX, features cold-gas thrusters and suction fans that allow it to perform aerial maneuvers, drive upside down, and jump over obstacles. During the demonstration, the unmanned prototype successfully accelerated from 0 to 97 km/h in approximately 0.81 seconds, navigated a vertical ramp, and performed mid-air rotations.
This presentation comes nine years after the initial Roadster concept. Musk stated that the vehicle is designed to redefine automotive capabilities, though he acknowledged that the extreme engineering involved prioritizes performance over conventional safety standards. The new model will be offered in three versions: Performance, Thrust, and Rocket, with production currently scheduled to begin in 2028. While Tesla showcased impressive technical feats, some analysts noted that the event serves as a promotional milestone for Musk’s broader business ventures. As it remains a prototype, the company has not confirmed independent verification of the acceleration claims or the feasibility of its commercial flight features.
