Cyprus Education Ministry to restrict teachers from working at schools attended by their children
The Cypriot Ministry of Education is implementing a new regulatory measure for the secondary education system, requiring teachers at middle schools, high schools, and technical schools to disclose the schools their children will attend over the next three academic years. This change will be integrated into the existing Educational Programming System (SEP) used for placement and transfer applications.
The policy aims to prevent conflicts of interest by restricting the placement of educators in schools where their children are enrolled. School administrations have been issued a circular requesting a formal list of all staff currently working in the same units as their children. Staff members found to be in such positions without prior authorization must provide documented justifications for their placement, such as specific health issues or service in rural schools, to be considered for an exception.
This initiative serves as a stricter enforcement of existing regulatory standards. By formalizing the declaration process through the SEP, the Ministry seeks to ensure greater transparency in staff distribution and administrative oversight across the secondary education sector.
