Cyprus reaffirms support for UN Good Offices mission
On October 14, 2026, Maria Michael, the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations, reaffirmed the country's full support for the mandate of the UN Good Offices mission in Cyprus during an address to the Fifth Committee of the UN General Assembly. The statement was made in the context of discussions regarding the proposed UN budget for 2027.
Ambassador Michael emphasized that deliberations concerning Special Political Missions must remain strictly focused on fiscal and budgetary matters. She highlighted that the mandate for the Good Offices mission is derived from existing UN Security Council resolutions. Specifically, she pointed to Resolution 2815 (2026), which defines the framework for the reunification of Cyprus as a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality. Aligning with the position of the European Union, the Ambassador described these missions as critical tools for maintaining international peace and security, asserting that they require sufficient funding to effectively carry out their assigned duties.
This intervention serves as a formal restatement of Cyprus's diplomatic position within the UN budgetary framework, ensuring that the mission's funding remains consistent with the established political parameters for conflict resolution on the island.
