Former Disy leader Averof Neophytou calls for lifting energy sanctions on Russia
On Friday, October 16, 2026, former Democratic Rally (DISY) leader Averof Neophytou held a press conference in Strovolos to address rising inflation and energy costs in Cyprus, which he noted were the highest in Europe over the last two months. Neophytou proposed that President Nikos Christodoulides should urge the European Union at the next summit to review and lift energy sanctions against Russia, citing a similar easing of measures by the United States as a justification for the shift.
Despite his controversial proposal, Neophytou stated he remains committed to his earlier positions regarding the illegality of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. When questioned about his internal party status and whether he intends to run for the 2028 presidential election following Annita Dimitriou’s withdrawal from the race, he declined to comment, stating he would address party matters at a later date.
In response, the Democratic Rally issued a statement clarifying that Neophytou's proposal regarding sanctions is a personal opinion. The party affirmed its alignment with the European People's Party and the collective policy of the 27 EU member states, emphasizing the necessity of coordination with Greece on international matters. Neophytou continues to face public scrutiny as he balances his political future within DISY and his evolving policy stances.
