President Christodoulides discusses Turkey climate summit and EU-Turkey relations
President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed he will attend an upcoming international climate summit in Antalya, Turkey. Despite the planned visit, the President noted that he is preparing for potential diplomatic surprises from the Turkish side, specifically mentioning reports that Ankara might involve Turkish Cypriot political figure Tufan Erhürman in the proceedings. Christodoulides emphasized that his administration remains prepared for any developments during the event.
Simultaneously, President Christodoulides announced that a high-level meeting between the European Union and Turkey is scheduled to take place before the end of October. Requested by the United Nations Secretary-General, this meeting aims to assess conditions for restarting negotiations on the Cyprus issue. Christodoulides reiterated that any progress in EU-Turkey relations is strictly contingent upon the resumption of talks based on the established framework. He also expressed hope that the involvement of the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy, María Ángela Holguín, alongside the EU's active participation, could foster positive momentum for a resolution.
