Prominent Greek shipowner and former Panathinaikos president Giorgos Vardinogiannis dies at 90
Greek shipowner Giorgos Vardinogiannis, widely known as the "Captain," passed away on October 16, 2026, at the age of 90 following a brief hospitalization. Born in 1936 in Episkopi, Rethymno, he was a key figure in the powerful Vardinogiannis family, with extensive interests in shipping, energy, and business. He gained prominence in the maritime industry for his daring operations, including breaking the international embargo on Rhodesia in the 1960s, a feat that solidified his legendary nickname.
Vardinogiannis is perhaps best remembered by the public for his 21-year tenure as president of the Panathinaikos football club, starting in 1979. During his leadership, the club secured six league titles, nine Greek Cups, and achieved notable European success. Following his passing, the sports community, including the Super League, Olympiacos, and various clubs, issued statements of condolence. To honor his memory, Panathinaikos will hold a minute of silence before their upcoming match against Asteras Aktor, where players will wear black armbands and lay flowers at his regular seat and the team entrance.
The Vardinogiannis family has announced that funeral arrangements are pending. His legacy remains tied to both his maritime business ventures and his transformative, albeit often controversial, impact on Greek professional football.
