Cyprus customs warn of potential threat from Tropilaelaps mite
The Cyprus Customs Department issued a formal warning on October 16, 2026, regarding the potential introduction and spread of the Tropilaelaps mercedesae mite into government-controlled areas. Authorities identified evidence of the mite's presence in parts of eastern Turkey, highlighting it as a major threat to local beekeeping due to its rapid reproductive cycle and the significant damage it can cause to bee brood and entire colonies.
Under the Green Line Regulation, the movement of animals and animal products across the line is strictly prohibited, and any identified goods are subject to immediate seizure. However, customs officials noted that because bees and related materials are easily concealed due to their small size, public cooperation is essential. The department has appealed to citizens to refrain from transporting bees, queen bees, or beekeeping equipment from the occupied areas to prevent a biological threat to the island's apiaries. Authorities urge citizens to report any suspicious movement of such materials to ensure the protection of the local bee population.
